London Roundtable brings together governing body officials, eSports strategists, commercial specialists, and federation leaders from the UK, China, Ukraine and Iceland to assess the sport's global development trajectory and define a pathway to professionalisation.&nbsp;LONDON, 9 April 2026: A landmark expert roundtable convened in London, gathering senior figures from across the international drone racing ecosystem, together with senior sports business consultants, to examine the sport's current state and map a credible path towards elite international competition.With the support of Rotary Academy, the session brought together participants from the United Kingdom, China, Ukraine and Iceland for a multi-stakeholder discussion spanning governance, commercialisation, broadcast strategy and the long-term development of the sport globally.&nbsp;Participants included representatives of governing bodies within the UK, Ukraine, and China, and commercial and broadcasting experts with major-event experience across FIFA World Cups, the UEFA Euros and the Tour de France, with backgrounds in rights acquisition and sponsorship at international level.&nbsp;KEY FINDINGS&nbsp;The roundtable identified a sport at a significant inflection point. Participation is growing again across major markets following the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the underlying foundations - governing structures, manufacturing capability, a committed participant base, and a demonstrably engaged audience - are already in place. The challenge, participants agreed, is not the absence of ingredients, but the absence of coordination.&nbsp;Key themes emerging from the discussion included:&nbsp;•&nbsp; The sport is structurally fragmented across all markets, with parallel organisations operating in silos. No participant believed fragmentation benefits the sport. Consolidation around existing FAI-affiliated structures was identified as the most logical path forward.&nbsp;•&nbsp; Major drone manufacturers remain largely absent from the commercial side of the sport, despite having a clear strategic interest. Well-packaged, high-quality competition at the right level was identified as the most effective mechanism for drawing manufacturers, technology brands, logistics companies and lifestyle sponsors into active partnership.&nbsp;•&nbsp; Drone racing has a credible pathway to classification as an IOC Category 2 eSport - alongside simulation titles such as EA FC and NBA 2K - which would open the door to Olympic eSports Games participation and trigger downstream recognition through continental and national games programmes.&nbsp;•&nbsp; Prominent FPV racing series’ have demonstrated the viability of elite drone racing as a spectator product, but maintaining close, competitive racing - rather than allowing pilots to spread across a course - was identified as a critical unresolved format challenge. This must be designed in from the outset, not treated as an incidental outcome.&nbsp;•&nbsp; Close-quarters competition, iconic venue selection, and a standardised equipment model that shifts competitive focus onto pilot skill were identified as the key format principles for any future elite series.&nbsp;•&nbsp; YouTube and OTT platforms, rather than linear broadcast, represent the most effective near-term distribution channel, given the young age profile of both athletes and audience. The production cost model for an emerging series will likely require the series to fund content and distribute it at low or no cost in the initial phase, representing the most viable early broadcast relationships.&nbsp;•&nbsp; Effective talent development requires engagement at seven to eight years of age. If the target competitive window is fifteen to twenty years old, the pipeline must begin a decade earlier. A clear, structured progression pathway - from grassroots participation through club competition to national and ultimately international elite level - is a prerequisite for sustainability.&nbsp;•&nbsp; The sport's long-term future lies in a multi-discipline ecosystem: mini whoop and tiny whoop racing, drone soccer, X-Class large-format racing, land-based competition formats, and ultimately manned racing drones, with FPV racing serving as the foundational entry-level discipline.&nbsp;PARTICIPANT PERSPECTIVES&nbsp;A representative from a UK governing body highlighted the structural challenges facing the UK scene, pointing to the sport's grassroots strength alongside the absence of prize money and commercial support as the primary barriers to growth. He noted that the UK's governance architecture is already in place and FAI-aligned, and that the priority is building on that foundation, rather than creating parallel structures. What was also emphasised was the importance of early-age engagement, drawing a direct parallel with Formula 1's junior development pipeline.&nbsp;Neil Chen, whose organisation has been involved in eSports strategy across three Asian Games cycles, provided perspective on China's rapidly developing national league structure. He highlighted the Chinese government's national drone racing strategy, launched two years ago, which has driven alignment between manufacturers, regional sports bureaus, and a new national league. He drew particular attention to the IOC's eSports classification framework, and the potential for drone racing to be formally recognised as a Category 2 simulation sport; as a development that could transform the sport's global legitimacy and unlock government investment across multiple nations.&nbsp;Artur Bulyhin, representing the Federation of Technological Sport of Ukraine, outlined a remarkable story of resilience and ambition. Despite the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has developed a national competition programme, an active schools outreach initiative, and a distinctive competition format incorporating practical logistics-based tasks. A first international competition involving pilots from Poland and Ukraine is planned for April 2026, with the inaugural Ukrainian Cup to follow in May.&nbsp;Stefan Gunnarsson, who has worked across commercial and rights strategy for the Icelandic Football Association and in the aviation sector, identified drone racing's inherent appeal to sponsorship buyers and potential to incorporate drone racing into promoting tourism for the country of Iceland. He noted that the sport's sponsorship architecture should reach beyond drone manufacturers to technology companies, logistics businesses investing in drone operations, and lifestyle brands targeting a young, digitally native audience.&nbsp;Additionally, a broadcast strategist with major international sports event experience provided a clear-eyed assessment of the distribution landscape. He confirmed that Drone Champions League content had previously aired on Premier Sport in the UK, noting that this kind of placement is typical for emerging sports without yet-proven audience figures, and identified YouTube as the definitive channel for this sport given its demographic profile. He outlined the production-first, distribution-second model as the realistic near-term path.&nbsp;ORGANISERS' STATEMENT&nbsp;“We went into this as sport business consultants, not drone experts. What we found is that all of the ingredients are there - a passionate participant base, governance structures already in place, world-class manufacturing capability, and a genuinely exciting product. The challenge now is joining those dots.
